Driving Test Guides

Everything you need to know about the Theory Test, Practical Test, and what to do after you pass.

What is the Theory Test?
The DVSA Theory Test consists of two parts: a Multiple Choice section and a Hazard Perception section. You must pass both parts in the same sitting to receive a pass certificate, which is valid for 2 years.
  • 50 multiple choice questions β€” you need 43/50 to pass
  • 14 hazard perception clips β€” you need 44/75 to pass
  • Total test time: approximately 57 minutes
  • Cost: Β£23 (as of 2026)
Multiple Choice Section
You'll be presented with 50 questions from a bank of approximately 700+ questions. Topics covered include:
  • Alertness and attitude
  • Safety and your vehicle
  • Safety margins
  • Hazard awareness
  • Vulnerable road users
  • Motorway rules
  • Rules of the road
  • Road and traffic signs
  • Documents and accidents
  • Vehicle handling and loading
Hazard Perception
You'll watch 14 video clips featuring everyday road scenes. Each clip contains at least one developing hazard (one clip has two). You score points by clicking the mouse when you spot a hazard developing.
  • Click as soon as you see a hazard developing
  • Earlier clicks = higher score (up to 5 points per hazard)
  • Don't click in a pattern β€” the system detects this and scores zero
  • Maximum score: 75 β€” Pass mark: 44
How to Book Your Theory Test
Book your Theory Test through the official DVSA website or by phone. You'll need:
  • A valid provisional driving licence
  • An email address for confirmation
  • Payment of Β£23 by card
  • Book at gov.uk/book-theory-test
  • Choose a test centre and date that suits you

Top Revision Tips

Follow these proven strategies to maximise your chances of passing the Theory Test first time:

  • βœ“ Start revising at least 2-3 weeks before your test
  • βœ“ Use the official DVSA revision question bank
  • βœ“ Practice hazard perception clips daily
  • βœ“ Take full mock tests under timed conditions
  • βœ“ Learn the Highway Code thoroughly
  • βœ“ Focus on areas where you score lowest

What to Bring on Test Day

⚠️ Important: You must bring your provisional driving licence (photocard). Without it, your test will be cancelled and you'll lose your fee. Arrive at least 15 minutes early.
What is the Practical Test?
The DVSA Practical Driving Test lasts approximately 40 minutes and assesses your ability to drive safely and competently. It includes:
  • An eyesight check (read a number plate from 20 metres)
  • 2 "Show me, tell me" vehicle safety questions
  • General driving on various road types
  • 20 minutes of independent driving (following sat-nav or signs)
  • 1 reversing manoeuvre
  • Possibly an emergency stop (1 in 3 tests include this)
  • Cost: Β£62 (weekdays) or Β£75 (weekends/evenings)
Show Me, Tell Me Questions
You'll be asked one "tell me" question (before driving) and one "show me" question (while driving). Common questions include:
  • Tell me how you'd check the brakes are working
  • Tell me how you'd check the tyres have enough tread
  • Show me how you'd wash and clean the front windscreen
  • Show me how you'd set the rear demister
  • Tell me how you'd check the headlights are working
  • Show me how you'd operate the horn
  • Tell me how you'd check engine oil level
Reversing Manoeuvres
You'll be asked to perform one of the following manoeuvres during your test:
  • Parallel parking β€” Park behind a stationary vehicle at the side of the road
  • Bay parking β€” Drive into and reverse out of a bay (or reverse in and drive out)
  • Pulling up on the right β€” Pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse 2 car lengths, then rejoin traffic
All manoeuvres are practiced extensively during our lessons so you'll be fully prepared.
Common Faults & How to Avoid Them
The most common reasons learners fail are:
  • Observation at junctions β€” Always check both ways multiple times
  • Mirror checks β€” Check mirrors before signalling or changing speed/direction
  • Steering control β€” Maintain smooth, consistent steering
  • Positioning on the road β€” Stay in the correct lane and position
  • Response to traffic lights β€” React promptly and correctly
  • Moving off safely β€” Full observations before moving away
You can make up to 15 driving faults (minors) and still pass. Any serious or dangerous fault is an automatic fail.

Independent Driving

For around 20 minutes of the test, you'll drive independently by either following directions from a sat-nav or road signs. Don't worry β€” it's not about remembering every turn, it's about demonstrating you can drive safely while following navigation.

πŸ’‘ Tip: If you miss a turning during independent driving, don't panic! The examiner won't mark you down for going the wrong way β€” only for how safely you drive.

Day-of-Test Checklist

  • βœ“ Bring your provisional driving licence (photocard)
  • βœ“ Bring your theory test pass certificate
  • βœ“ Arrive 10 minutes before your appointment
  • βœ“ Wear comfortable shoes suitable for driving
  • βœ“ Stay calm β€” take deep breaths before you start
  • βœ“ Have a lesson just before the test to warm up
Getting Your Full Licence
Congratulations on passing! Here's what to do next:
  • Your pass certificate is valid for 2 years
  • Apply for your full licence at gov.uk/apply-first-full-driving-licence
  • You can apply online (takes about 1 week) or by post (up to 3 weeks)
  • You can drive as soon as you pass β€” you don't need to wait for your full licence
  • You'll need to send your provisional licence and pass certificate
Car Insurance Tips
Insurance for new drivers can be expensive, but there are ways to save:
  • Get multiple quotes β€” use comparison websites
  • Consider a telematics (black box) policy for lower premiums
  • Add a named experienced driver to your policy
  • Choose a car in a low insurance group (1-10)
  • Increase your voluntary excess (but only if you can afford it)
  • Complete the Pass Plus course for potential discounts
  • Pay annually rather than monthly to save on interest
Buying Your First Car
Choosing your first car is exciting! Here's our advice:
  • Set a realistic budget (include insurance, tax, MOT, fuel)
  • Choose a reliable make β€” Ford Fiesta, VW Polo, and Toyota Yaris are popular first cars
  • Check the car's MOT history at gov.uk/check-mot-history
  • Run an HPI check to verify the car isn't stolen or has finance
  • Consider a smaller engine (1.0-1.4L) for cheaper insurance and fuel
  • Get the car inspected by an independent mechanic before buying
  • Check the car's V5C (logbook) matches the seller's details
Motorway Driving & Pass Plus
Your driving test doesn't include motorway driving, but you'll eventually need to use them. We recommend:
  • Pass Plus course β€” A 6-hour post-test course covering motorways, night driving, dual carriageways, town driving, rural roads, and adverse weather
  • Many insurance companies offer discounts for Pass Plus completion
  • Practice motorway driving with an experienced driver first
  • Learn merging, lane discipline, and safe following distances
  • Use the left lane unless overtaking
  • Plan your route before you join a motorway
New Driver Rules (Probation)
In your first 2 years of driving, stricter rules apply:
  • If you get 6 or more penalty points, your licence will be revoked
  • You'll have to reapply for a provisional licence and retake both Theory and Practical tests
  • Common ways to get points: speeding (3-6 points), using phone (6 points), running a red light (3 points)
  • Consider using P-plates to alert other drivers (not compulsory in England, but recommended)
  • Drive defensively and avoid risky situations in your early months

Continue Learning

Passing your test is just the beginning! You'll continue to learn and improve as you gain experience. Here are some tips:

  • βœ“ Avoid driving on unfamiliar roads alone at first
  • βœ“ Avoid driving late at night until you're more confident
  • βœ“ Build up to longer journeys gradually
  • βœ“ Don't feel pressured to carry passengers immediately
  • βœ“ Consider an advanced driving course later
